How to Save an Instagram Reel to Your Camera Roll

Updated 2026-10-01

Tapping Save in Instagram bookmarks the reel — it does not download it. To get the file onto your phone you need one extra step, and it works the same way on iPhone and Android.

First: two different meanings of “save”

Instagram has a button labelled Save, and it does not do what the word implies. It adds the reel to a private collection inside the app. If you lose your account, or you are offline, or the poster deletes the reel, your saved item is gone too.

Downloading means the video file ends up on your device, where it keeps working regardless of what happens on Instagram.

If you have ever wondered where your saved reels went — they are at Profile → Menu → Saved. They are links, not files.

What you cannot do from inside the app

There is no download button for other people's reels. Instagram removed the option for most accounts because downloads take content away from the app that measures its performance. For your own reels, you can download from the reel's menu if you originally posted it.

That leaves a browser in the middle for anything else.

iPhone: step by step

1
Copy the reel link.Open the reel, tap the share arrow, then Copy link.
2
Paste it into a web downloader.Open the site in Safari, paste the link, and start the download.
3
Find it in Files.Safari saves to Downloads inside the Files app — not to Photos.
4
Move it to Photos. In Files, long-press the video, choose Share, then Save Video. It now appears in your camera roll.
That fourth step is the one everybody misses. The file is on your phone from step three, it is just not in the photo library yet.

Android: step by step

1
Copy the reel link.Same as iPhone: share arrow, then Copy link.
2
Open a web downloader in Chrome.Paste the link and start the download.
3
Check Downloads.Chrome saves to the Downloads folder, reachable from your file manager.
4
Move it to the gallery. Some phones index Downloads automatically. If not, open the file manager, move the video to Pictures or DCIM, and the gallery picks it up.

When it will not work, and why

  • Private accounts. If you cannot view a reel, no tool can download it. Anything claiming otherwise is asking for your login — do not give it.
  • Deleted reels. Once the poster removes a reel, the file is gone from the platform. No downloader can recover it.
  • Region-locked content. If the reel does not load for you, it cannot be fetched for you.
  • Stories versus reels. They are handled by different systems. A reel link and a story link are not interchangeable.

What about the audio

A downloaded reel keeps its original audio inside the MP4 — you do not need a separate file to keep the sound. If you specifically want the audio alone, the usual route is to download the MP4 and extract the track afterwards; a reel does not have a separate downloadable audio source the way a music app does.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no download button on Instagram?

Because Instagram removed it for most accounts. Downloads take views and engagement out of the app, so the feature is reserved for your own posts.

Does saving a reel notify the person who posted it?

No. Instagram does not tell anyone that you saved or downloaded their public reel. Be aware that reposting someone else's video without permission is a separate issue.

Can I download a reel without an account?

On ReelFetch, yes. Paste the public link and download. You do not need to log in to Instagram or to the tool.

Why does the video appear in Files but not in Photos?

iOS keeps browser downloads in the Files app by design. Move the file into Photos once and it will show up in your camera roll like any other video.

Will the downloaded reel have a watermark?

Public reels are served without a visual watermark, so what you download is what plays. There is no watermark to remove — that problem belongs to a different platform.

Save a Reel in three steps

Paste the reel link and get the MP4. No account, no app, no watermark.
