Why the desktop site has no download button
On mobile, your own posts can be downloaded from the post menu. On the desktop site that option does not exist at all — not for your posts, not for anyone else’s.
The reason fits a pattern you have probably noticed: the web version is built for browsing and messaging. Saving media is treated as a mobile concern.
So the browser has to do the work instead.

Where the file actually ends up
Windows
Chrome and Edge drop files in C:\Users\<you>\Downloads unless you changed the default. Firefox asks first by default, which is why its users tend to know where their downloads go.
macOS
Safari and Chrome both use ~/Downloads. Safari can be set to ask every time — worth turning on if you download often and lose track.
About the browser extensions
There are extensions that promise to add a download button inside Instagram itself. Two things worth knowing before you install one.
- They ask for permission to read and change data on every page you visit, not just Instagram. That is a lot of trust for a small convenience.
- They break. Instagram changes its page markup regularly, and extensions that depend on it go quiet for weeks at a time.
A link-based downloader avoids both problems, because it never needs to live inside the page.
When it does not work
- Private accounts. No tool can fetch a post you cannot see.
- Age-restricted posts. Instagram will not serve the media without a session it trusts.
- Deleted posts. The file is gone from the platform.
- Very long videos. Some resolvers cap file size. Try again later or from a different connection.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download Instagram videos on a PC without an extension?
Yes. Copy the post link and paste it into a web-based downloader. No install, no extension, no sign-in.
Does it work on both Windows and macOS?
Both. The fetching happens server-side, so your operating system does not matter — only the browser does.
Why is there no download button on Instagram desktop?
Instagram does not offer one there. The web version treats saving media as a mobile feature.
Where do downloaded Instagram videos go on Windows?
Usually the Downloads folder, unless your browser is configured to ask you for a location first.
Is a browser-based downloader safe?
Judge it the way you would judge any site. It should not ask for your Instagram password, should not require an install, and should hand you the file directly.
